GUIDES

Learn AI citation visibility, one question at a time

Four steps, in the order the questions actually come up: what this is, how it gets measured, what moves it, and how to decide if it deserves your budget.

Step 1

Concept

What is AI citation visibility?

AI citation visibility is how often AI engines like ChatGPT, Gemini, and Perplexity bring up your brand when they answer questions your buyers ask. More people now ask an AI engine for a recommendation instead of scanning ten search results, and the engine names a handful of brands in its answer. If yours is among them, you exist in that conversation; if not, a competitor is getting introduced in your place. Measuring that presence is the starting point: you cannot improve what you have never seen.

Is this the same as SEO?

No. SEO earns you a position on a results page, while citation visibility earns you a place inside the answer itself. In classic search, the user still sees ten links and chooses; in an AI answer, the engine has already chosen which brands to mention, and everyone else is invisible. The two overlap in places, since well-structured, genuinely useful content helps both, but they are measured differently and fail differently. A site can rank well in Google and still never appear in AI answers, and the reverse happens too.

Step 2

Measurement

Why measure the same question three times?

Because AI answers change between runs, a single run can mislead you in either direction. Ask the same engine the same question twice and you may get different brands, different sources, or a different framing entirely; the output is non-deterministic by design. Running each question three times lets us report how consistently you appear, not just whether you appeared once when we happened to look. A brand cited in three out of three runs is in a very different position from one cited in one out of three, and a single-run report cannot tell those apart.

What’s the difference between a mention and a citation?

A mention is your brand’s name appearing in the answer text; a citation is the engine pointing to your site as a source for what it said. Both matter, but they signal different things: a mention means the engine knows you exist in this category, while a citation means it treats your content as evidence worth linking to. An answer can name you without citing you, or cite a third-party article about you without ever quoting your site. We track both separately, because the work needed to earn each one is different.

Step 3

Improvement

What actually makes an AI engine cite a brand?

Three things, in our measurements so far: content that directly answers the question a buyer is asking, structure that machines can parse cleanly, and independent third-party sources that talk about you. Engines pull from what they can read and verify; a page that buries its answer, or a brand nobody else mentions, gives them little to work with. It is honest to add that some queries will not move no matter what you do; nobody controls these engines, including us. That is exactly why we measure before and after every change instead of assuming the work paid off.

Step 4

Adoption

How do I know if my category is worth investing in?

Run the free scan first. It answers this question before you spend anything. The scan checks whether AI engines are actually being asked about your category and whether they name brands when answering; if your buyers are not asking AI about what you sell yet, keep your money and check back in a quarter. If they are asking and you are absent while competitors show up, that is a concrete, measured reason to invest. Either way, you decide from data about your own market, not from someone’s pitch.

How do I choose a GEO vendor, including how to judge us?

Six checks, and apply every one of them to us too.

  1. 1

Measurement is in the contract: a baseline before work starts and re-measurement after. If they sell execution only, you are buying results on faith.

  2. 2

Frequency, not yes/no: results reported as “cited in 2 of 3 runs”. A single run is a dice roll, not a measurement.

  3. 3

Methodology is published: runs per query, fixed query sets, and stated limitations, in writing, before you sign.

  4. 4

No promised placement: AI answers are non-deterministic, so a promised outcome is the clearest warning sign in this market.

  5. 5

Clean third-party references: if their method is buying links, private blog networks, or mass-published AI content, engines penalize exactly that, at your brand’s risk.

  6. 6

Honest about what won’t move: they should tell you which queries won’t respond before you spend. Beware when every query conveniently looks winnable.

A vendor that fails these checks is selling you the dice roll; one that passes them can be held to their own numbers.
